FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q: Can my wife/husband go with me?

A: No. At the present time, we have many veterans on the waiting list and hundreds more who will apply. It is doubtful that we will get to every deserving veteran in time. Already we have had some veterans pass before being able to make the trip. Many more may be lost before being able to make the trip. The only spouses permitted to go, are those who are veterans themselves.

Q: How much does it cost?

A: There is no cost to the Michigan WWII Veteran. The all expenses paid trip is our gift to the WWII Veteran who gave so much for us. No money is needed unless you intend to purchase souvenirs.

Q: Do you do any overnight trips?

A: No, all our trips are one day excursions.

Q: I need special needs for assistance, a special medical condition or I need a wheelchair - can I still go on the trip?

A: Absolutely. But you must completely disclose information on your application. Please inform of us of all your medical conditions, special medical/medicine needs, mobility and above you must inform your doctor of the rigors of the one day trip to Washington D.C. and get his or her permission for you to participate.

Q: Can my son, daughter, grandson, etc. go as a guardian?

A: Under certain limited circumstances. Our TOP priority is the safe travel of ALL the veterans.

A Normal ratio is 3 veterans to 1 guardian or 1 veteran in wheelchair to 1 guardian. Who will or will not serve as a guardian and how many guardians will be needed is the sole responsibility of the Program Director. That decision is based on many factors including how many disabled veterans are scheduled to go. When you register for a trip, have your son or daughter register as a potential guardian at the same time and if it is possible to arrange for your relative to go on the same trip as you we will do so.

Q: Can I make a donation to Honor Flight Michigan?

A: Honor Flight Michigan gratefully accepts donations from anyone. To make a donation, go to the Donation page of the website for options.

Q: How are you funded?

A: Honor Flight Michigan is funded by public donations from generous individuals across Michigan that recognize the great accomplishments and sacrifices of our WWII Veterans and who want them to see their memorial. Other significant contributors have been fraternal organizations and area school students.

Q: I didn't serve overseas, am I eligible?

A: As long as you were in the service of the USA during WWII (12/7/41 to 12/31/46) - you are eligible for a trip.

Q: How much walking is involved?

A: A good indication is you need to be able to walk about 100 yards between stops or rests.

Q: Can I pay my own way?

A: No. As a WWII veteran your trip is free. Upon your return if you would like to make a donation so that another deserving veteran can go, you may do so.

Q: How can I help?

A: Depending on what you would like to do in our organization, you may contact us to volunteer or make a donation by sending an e-mail to info@honorflightmichigan.com

Q; Can Our Organization or me as an individual, make a donation to send a specific Veteran that we know?

A: Yes - we can accept a donation to our organization for a specific deserving veteran or veterans from your area. However - We do have a couple stipulations that apply to this type of donation.

#1. Once we receive your donation in support of sending your specified veteran and his/her application (available on our website www.HonorFlightMichigan.com) to take their Honor Flight, they will be placed on our waiting list in the order of the application date as we do all veterans. We select our veterans for the flights in order of application date and the only exceptions are if a veteran has a shorter than average life expectance due to health or age issues.

#2 If the donation is made for more than one veteran from your area and the want to travel together, we will do our very best to honor that request.

#3 If the veteran who the donation was intended for would pass away before his/her scheduled flight, we ask that donation(s) made to honor him/her be used to send a waiting Veteran and we will take an American Flag with us to the WWII Memorial in Washington D.C. and dedicate in the intended Veterans Honor and return it to their family.

Q: Are there stairs to climb?

A: Yes there are a few, including getting on and off tour buses.

Q: What should I wear/how should I dress?

A: Be sure to dress in layers of clothing shirts, sweaters and jackets depending on the time of the year. Then you can add or remove clothing as needed for your comfort.

A: Only for your personal spend or any souvenirs. All transportation, meals, water etc., are courteous of Honor Flight Michigan.

Q: What should I bring with me? What should I not bring with me?

You can bring your medicine that you would normally take for a day with and we suggest you bring at least an extra days dosage in case of emergency or we would experience any flight or travel delays.
